- Shops and offices open in daytime can often start with panels only.
- Homes with evening load shedding usually need a battery.
- Under net billing, a battery saves more than it used to.
- Pick a hybrid inverter so you can add a battery later.
Almost every buyer asks us the same thing once they see the battery price: “Can I skip it for now?” Sometimes, yes. Sometimes it is the most important part of the system. It depends on your day.
When panels only can work
- Your use is mostly daytime. Shops, clinics, schools and offices that close by evening.
- Load shedding is rare or short in your area.
- Budget is tight right now and you plan to add a battery within a year or two.
In these cases a hybrid inverter that can run without a battery is a sensible start. The Infinix Recon V4 Twin 6kW is built for exactly this: it works with or without a battery, so you can add one later.

When you really need a battery
- Evening load shedding. Without a battery, a grid-tied system shuts off when the grid goes, even if it is still light outside.
- Most of your use is after sunset. Families who are out all day.
- Someone at home needs steady power: work from home, students, elderly family, medical devices.
Net billing changed the maths
Before 2026, extra solar was worth almost as much as the grid unit it replaced. Now an exported unit earns about Rs10 to 11, while a unit you buy back costs several times that. A battery lets you keep your own power instead of selling it cheap. That makes it pay back faster than it used to.
A middle path
A common way to start is with one 5kWh battery for lights, fans, the fridge and the router during outages, and add a second one later. It is a lot cheaper than a full-backup system on day one, and covers what matters most.
Not sure how many hours one battery will give you? Our backup hours guide walks through it, or use the load calculator and tick the things you need during load shedding.
