Cut Your Load Before Buying Solar: Cheap Changes That Shrink the System

The cheapest solar panel is the one you don’t need to buy. A few small changes can shrink your system and your bill.

Before spending lakhs on solar, spend a little time and a few thousand rupees making your home use less. Every watt saved means fewer panels, a smaller battery and more backup hours from the same system. It’s the best return on money in the whole project.

Best value changes

  • Replace old tube lights and bulbs with LED.
  • Swap old ceiling fans for energy-efficient or DC inverter fans.
  • Fix fridge door seals and keep fridges away from heat.
  • Replace the oldest non-inverter AC first.

1. Lights: switch to LED

An old tube light with a choke can draw 40 to 50W. An LED tube giving similar light uses around 18 to 20W. Across 15 to 20 lights in a house, that’s a meaningful drop, especially in the evening when lights run on battery.

2. Fans: the hidden giant

Old ceiling fans often draw around 75 to 100W each. Energy-efficient models use noticeably less, and DC inverter fans can draw around 30 to 40W at similar speed. A house with eight fans running through summer nights saves a lot of battery capacity with this change alone.

3. Refrigerator

  • Check the door seal by closing it on a sheet of paper. If the paper slides out easily, the seal leaks.
  • Leave a gap behind the fridge for airflow.
  • Keep it away from the stove and out of direct sun.
  • Very old fridges can use far more than a modern inverter fridge.

4. Air conditioners

If you have a mix of old and new ACs, replacing the oldest non-inverter unit usually saves more than any other single change. Inverter ACs also start gently, which lets you use a smaller solar inverter. Setting the thermostat to 26°C instead of 20°C saves a surprising amount too.

5. Water motor

A leaking tank float valve or a pipe leak makes the motor run longer every day. Fixing leaks and using a timer or automatic controller reduces motor hours.

6. Standby and small loads

TV boxes, chargers, old desktop computers and decorative lights left on all night add up. Turning them off at the switch, especially when running on battery, stretches backup time.

See the difference in numbers

Use our load calculator twice: once with your current appliances, once with the improvements. The difference in recommended inverter, panels and battery often pays for the LEDs and fans many times over.

Already have solar? These changes still help. They mean more of your solar is left over for the AC, and your battery lasts longer through load shedding. See also daytime habits that cut the bill.
