Solar for Poultry and Dairy Farms: Fans, Lights, Pumps and Chillers

When power fails in a poultry shed in summer, losses come fast. Solar plus backup protects both birds and margins.

Poultry and dairy farmers know exactly what an outage costs. In a closed poultry shed in June, ventilation stopping for even a short time is a serious risk to the flock. On a dairy farm, a milk chiller losing power means milk quality drops. Solar with battery backup is increasingly how farms protect themselves and cut costs.

Farm priorities

  • Ventilation fans are critical in hot weather, so backup is essential.
  • Milk chillers need steady power to protect quality.
  • Dust and ammonia mean inverters need a clean, protected room.
  • Three-phase supply is common on larger farms.

Poultry farms: what needs power

  • Exhaust and circulation fans, the biggest load in summer
  • Cooling pads and their water pumps
  • Lighting programmes
  • Water supply pumps and medication dosers
  • Controllers and alarms

Large environment-controlled sheds can have many large exhaust fans, often three-phase. Open-sided sheds have smaller loads.

Dairy farms: what needs power

  • Milk chillers and bulk tanks
  • Milking machines
  • Fans and misters for animals in summer
  • Water pumps
  • Lights and chaff cutters

Why solar fits

The heaviest farm loads, ventilation and cooling, peak during hot sunny afternoons, exactly when solar is strongest. That means a big share of the load can run directly on solar.

Battery: size for what’s critical

You don’t need to run everything on battery. Identify what absolutely must run during an outage, such as minimum ventilation for the shed or the milk chiller, and size the battery for that. Less critical loads can wait for the grid or generator.

Farm-specific precautions

  • Dust and ammonia: keep the inverter and battery in a clean, separate room, not inside the shed.
  • Lightning: farms are exposed, so earthing and surge protection are essential. See our earthing guide.
  • Security: panels in open fields need anti-theft fixings.
  • Generator integration: many farms keep a generator. Some hybrid inverters can work alongside one.

Water pumping

For tubewells and larger irrigation pumps, a dedicated solar pump drive often makes more sense than running them through the main hybrid system. Read solar tubewells and pumps.
