- Lower winter output is normal, not a fault.
- Main reasons: shorter days, lower sun, smog, fog and dust.
- Cold weather actually helps panels work more efficiently.
- Clean panels, check shading and use power in peak sun hours.
Many solar owners in Pakistan open their inverter app in October and see fewer units than in summer. The first worry is that something is wrong. In most cases nothing is wrong. Winter output is lower for natural reasons.
5 reasons solar makes less power in winter
1. Shorter days
There are fewer hours of strong sunlight in winter, so panels have less time to produce power.
2. The sun is lower in the sky
In winter the sun travels lower, so sunlight hits flat or low-tilt panels at a weaker angle.
3. Smog and fog
In Punjab especially, smog and fog block part of the sunlight. On heavy smog days output can drop sharply.
4. Dust on panels
With less rain to wash them, panels collect dust and smog residue, which cuts output further.
5. Longer shadows
A low sun creates longer shadows from walls, water tanks and nearby buildings. A shadow on part of a panel string can reduce output across the whole string.
The good news: cold helps
Solar panels work more efficiently when they are cool. Heat lowers panel voltage, so on a clear, cold winter day each hour of sun can be very productive.
How to get more from your solar this winter
- Clean panels every 2 to 3 weeks during smog season, early morning, with plain water and a soft brush. See our cleaning guide.
- Check for new shadows at midday and trim trees if needed.
- Use heavy loads at midday, between 11am and 3pm.
- Keep the battery healthy. Avoid draining a lithium battery to zero. Read our battery care tips.
- Compare month to month, not winter to summer, when you check your app.

When should you call a technician?
- Output is much lower than the same month last year on clear days.
- One string shows zero or very low power.
- The inverter shows error codes or keeps restarting.
- Panels have cracks, burn marks or loose cables.
Frequently asked questions
How much less does solar make in winter?
It varies by city, panel angle and weather. On clear winter days output is good. On smoggy or foggy days it can be much lower.
Should I change my panel angle for winter?
A steeper tilt helps in winter, but most home mounts are fixed. Keeping panels clean and shade-free is the easier win.
Is it worth adding a battery in winter?
Yes, if you face load shedding. A battery stores midday solar for evening use when gas and grid are both limited.
