4kW, 5kW or 6kW Inverter: Which Size Do You Really Need?

Buying a bigger inverter than you need wastes money. Buying too small means it trips. Here is an easy way to pick the right size for your home.

Quick answer

  • Add up the watts of everything you run at the same time.
  • Choose an inverter about 20 to 30% above that number.
  • 4kW suits small homes with one AC; 6kW suits most family homes.
  • When in doubt, choose the size up and a model that supports parallel use.

The most common question we hear is simple: “Which inverter size should I buy?” The answer depends on what you run at the same time, not on everything in your house.

Step 1: List what runs together

Use these typical power ratings as a guide. Check the label on your own appliances for the exact number.

ApplianceTypical power
LED light10 to 20W
Ceiling fan (inverter fan)30 to 75W
Fridge150 to 300W
LED TV60 to 150W
Washing machine400 to 800W
1-ton inverter ACabout 900 to 1,200W
1.5-ton inverter ACabout 1,300 to 1,800W
Water pump (1 HP)about 750W, more at start-up

Step 2: Add 20 to 30% extra

Motors in pumps, fridges and ACs pull extra power when they start. Leave headroom so the inverter does not trip. Example: if your running load is 3,500W, choose a 4.5kW to 5kW class inverter or the next size up.

Step 3: Match the size to your home

What about a 5kW inverter?

Many people search for a “5kW inverter”. In practice, a 5kW load is usually best served by a 6kW inverter, which gives you safe headroom and space to grow. If your load is closer to 3.5kW, a 4kW model like the Smart or Prism Twin 4kW, both with 5,000W PV input, is the better value.

Tip: Dual output inverters can switch off heavy loads automatically when the battery is low, so your lights and fans keep running longer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upgrade later if I buy a smaller inverter?

Some models support parallel operation, so you can add a second unit later. Ask us which models allow this before you buy.

Does a bigger inverter use more electricity?

A larger inverter has slightly higher idle consumption, but the difference is small. Buying the right size matters more.

Should the battery size match the inverter?

Battery size depends on how many hours of backup you want. Read our battery backup guide to work it out.
