Solar panels were the story of the last five years in Pakistan. In 2026, the story is batteries. Imports of batteries from China rose almost 150% in the first half of 2026, to about $392 million, according to Bloomberg. Here is why storage is booming and what to look for if you are buying one.
Why Pakistanis are adding batteries
1. Load shedding has not gone away
Pakistani firms report a median of around 45 hours of grid outages a month. A battery keeps lights, fans, fridges and internet running when the grid is down, without the noise and fuel cost of a generator.
2. Exporting solar pays much less
Under NEPRA’s 2026 net billing rules, new solar users are paid only about Rs10 to 11 for each unit exported, while imported units cost Rs37 to 55. Storing daytime solar and using it in the evening is now worth far more than sending it to the grid.
3. Lithium has become affordable
Battery imports grew from about $120 million in 2022 to about $300 million in 2025 as LiFePO₄ prices fell. For most homes, lithium is now the default choice over tubular batteries.
How to choose the right solar battery
- Chemistry: choose LiFePO₄ (lithium iron phosphate) for long cycle life and thermal safety in Pakistan’s heat.
- Usable capacity: a 5kWh battery can run fans, lights and a fridge for several hours. Use our backup hours guide to calculate your needs.
- Voltage and inverter match: a 51.2V battery suits 48V hybrid inverters. Check that your inverter supports lithium and BMS communication.
- IP rating: IP54 or IP65 protects against dust and water if the battery is installed in a garage, porch or semi-outdoor area.
- Warranty and local support: buy from a supplier who can service the battery in Pakistan.
